Fluency in Silent Reading: A Critical Need
Fluency in reading today is widely recognized as a critical need in terms of reading competency. It is stressed in the "No Child Left Behind" legislation, the 2000 report of the National Reading Panel, and in numerous research reports in the 2001 Scientific Study of Reading Journal. The National Reading Panel went so far as to conclude that, "Children who do not develop reading fluency, no matter how bright they are, will continue to read slowly and with great effort."
Fluency is Difficult to Achieve Without Training
Most students, in their early years of beginning reading, do not receive the training that is required for building:
These skills are termed the Fundamental Reading Process.
These skills are subliminal in nature; however they initiate all forms of reading and come into play between three to five times per second as students move their eyes along lines of print. These vital visual skills cannot be directed by a teacher nor controlled by a student but can be efficiently trained by computer techniques. Improvement in the Fundamental Reading Process allows students to achieve high reading rates, ensures confidence in reading, develops better comprehension, and leads to greater enjoyment of reading. These changes are also likely to affect a student's outlook about reading and learning in general. "It's not your smarts; simply the need for key skills."

Comprehension and Vocabulary
Because of its complexity, reading requires the greatest attention of all of the communication skills. Comprehension in reading is a multifaceted cognitive activity involving understanding, interpretation, organization, evaluation, and analysis. A reader utilizes a combination of these skills when comprehending a specific reading selection, but the same reader would use a different skill "mix" in a different reading situation. Students using Reading Plus Online® will profit from the systematic programs that methodically develop comprehension and vocabulary skills.
How the Program Works
A typical Reading Plus® program at Hope Clinic starts with an initial evaluation. Following the testing, a ten day trial period is initiated where activities and communications are completed via the Internet. Students work at home or school (anywhere with Internet access) for 30-60 minute sessions at least four times per week. The Hope Clinic professional staff tracks all work performed and sends weekly e-mail reports and lesson plan adjustments. At the end of the ten day trial period, the student is formally enrolled and completes the 6 month program. Progress evaluations are completed at the third and sixth month. Tuition covers the full 6 month program, materials, professional monitoring, and progress evaluations. Monthly payment plans are available. Call Hope Clinic for more details and current tuition rates.
